Jay Veldman

VELDMAN- Mr. Jay Veldman, aged 84, of Coopersville went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 25, 2020.  Jay was born on May 29, 1935 to Clifford and Marian (Busman) Veldman who preceded him in death. Jay was preceded in death by brother-in-law, Bert Schipper, sister Marilyn and brother-in-law Cal Meindertsma, and sister Sharon Young.  Jay is survived by his wife of 62 years and his high school sweetheart, Ginny (Bronkema) Veldman. He is survived by his children Cheryl (Tom) Harsay, Scott (Shari) Veldman, Ron (Beth) Veldman, and Roger (Cheryl) Veldman. He holds special memories with 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He is survived by his sister, Leona Schipper and brother-in law, Don Young.  Also mourning his loss are members of the Bronkema Family.  His memory will live on through many nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends.

After graduating from Coopersville High School in 1953 he attended Hope College. Upon graduation Jay began a teaching career at Coopersville High School in 1958. He taught English, coached multiple sports over 42 seasons, started track meets for 15 years, and served in many volunteer roles. He retired after 37 years of teaching in 1995. He also volunteered for over 30 years with the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the highest volunteer award, the Silver Beaver for his service.

He also was a lifetime member of the Coopersville Reformed Church and served for over 20 years as a Sunday School teacher and as a church leader.  Jay’s faith, family, and friends were the main components of his life. Jay was known for his dry sense of humor, calm demeanor, and wisdom. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Due to the pandemic, a drive-in celebration of life service will be held in the Coopersville Reformed Church parking lot at 10am on Saturday, May 30.  Guests are asked to stay in their cars.  Those who wish will be able to drive through a greeting line past the family from 9:30 – 9:50 or following the service .  People may also view the event through live-stream via the link on the Coopersville Reformed Church Facebook page as well.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Coopersville Area Community Foundation, 182 East St. Rm 112, Coopersville, MI 49404 or the Coopersville High School Athletic Department, 198 East St., Coopersville, MI 49404.
