Stephen Bruce Avery, age 76, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in Grand Rapids, MI. He was born on May 10, 1950, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Stephen will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, humor, and the warmth he brought to those around him.
Stephen had the ability to make people feel welcome and could brighten any room with his sense of humor. He was a friend, a good listener, and someone people could count on. He enjoyed time with family.
A lifelong sports fan, Stephen passionately followed the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and University of Michigan Football. He also spent many years supporting young athletes through the South Christian School sports booster, giving his time and energy to a cause he truly enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Jeff (Anita) Avery, Eric (Jody) Avery , and Becky (Jeff) Setsma . He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Anneke (Sebastian) DeFant, Adam Avery, Reuben Avery, Micah Avery, Nick Avery, Lyndsee (Aaron) Greenbauer, Madison Avery, Lucas Setsma, and Ellie Setsma, along with 9 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his siblings, Mary (Ken) Ricord, Linda Chappell, Sharon (Doug) Hinken, Russell (Faith) Avery, and Jill (Bent) Lanning, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Stephen will be remembered for his generous spirit, quick wit, steady presence, and the many lives he touched. His memory will live on through the stories, traditions, and countless moments he shared with others.
In keeping with his wish cremation has taken place. No services to be held. Condolences for the family may be left on Stephen's guestbook at www.throopfh.com.
