Robert Ora Whelpley Jr., of Coopersville, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at the age of 69. He was born in Fremont, MI to Robert and Beverly on March 16, 1957. Robert was proceeded in death by his father Robert Whelpley Sr., his mother and step father Bevery and Bud Clish as well as his brother Butch Whelpley.
Robert served in the United States Army for 24 years. He loved helping others. He would give a total stranger his last dollar without a second thought. He was an amazing father who absolutely adored his 3 daughters. Above all, one of his most favorite things was getting to be a papa. His grandchildren were his world and he never missed the chance to get to spoil them. Robert was a big fan of the Detroit Lions and never missed watching one of their games. He looked forward to Bingo Wednesdays at the Depot with all of his friends. In his downtime he could often be found sitting in his favorite chair working on a word search puzzle while watching one of his game shows.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Becky (Steve Allyn) Higley, Ashley (Mark) Ward, Emily (Austin) Poling. As well as his grandchildren, Zachary (Atya) Higley, Sean (Santana) Higley, Aubrie (Victor) Nelson, Nathan Smrcina-Poling, Morgan Poling. Millie Poling; His great grandchildren, Daisy Higley. Nat Higley, Bella Higley, Iris Higley, Esme Higley, Ember Higley, Orie Nelson and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, a cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 11am at the Throop Funeral Home. 214 Church St. Coopersville, MI 49404 with Rev. Tommy Boutell officiating. His daughters would like to invite everyone to join them after the service at the Coopersville VFW post 5598. 511 68th Ave N, Coopersville, MI 49404 for a celebration of life luncheon. Memorial donations may be made to the Whelpley family to help cover funeral expenses c/o Emily Poling. Condolences for the family may be left on Robert’s guestbook at
