MaryAnn (Walt) Smoes

April 24, 1930 — May 11, 2024

MaryAnn (Walt) Smoes, knowing that she was not her own, but belonged — body and soul, in life and in death — to her faithful Savior Jesus Christ, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024, at the age of 94. Her loving husband of 69 years, Norman, was by her side.

MaryAnn lived in Coopersville her entire life. She loved her family and her church dearly and always put others before herself. Many will remember her as their “room mother” during their school days, and she could always be counted on to supply baked goods for church functions. MaryAnn was an active and beloved member of Little Farms Chapel, and also participated in the Coopersville Area Old Kids group (traveling, singing in the choir, and walking for exercise), quilting club to provide blankets for those in need, and Bible Study to nourish her soul. More than anything, she loved to travel with Norman to visit their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It can truly be said, “She went about doing good.”

MaryAnn is survived by her husband, Norman Jay Smoes; children Dale (Jane) Smoes, Carol (James) Derks, Donna (Gerald) Yager, and Peter (Heather) Smoes; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, with another expected; sister-in-law Ruthann (Longnecker) Walt; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Caroline (Hendricks) Walt; brother and sister-in-law Warren (Nellie) Walt; brother and sister-in-law Gerald (Nina) Walt; brother Marvin Walt; and daughter-in-law Barbara Jo (VanderKolk) Smoes.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 17, from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at Throop Funeral Home in Coopersville. A celebration of life will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, May 18, at Little Farms Chapel, 2518 Arthur Street in Coopersville, with Pastor Bob Van Manen officiating. Burial will be at Coopersville-Polkton Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in MaryAnn’s honor to Little Farms Chapel Mission Fund, 2518 Arthur Street, Coopersville, MI 49404. Condolences may be left online at www.throopfh.com.
