Leonard Kastelin

June 9, 1921 — October 9, 2014

Leonard James Kastelin, age 93, of Newaygo, formerly of Coopersville, began eternal life with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct 9, 2014. He was born on June 9, 1921 in Grand Rapids MI. Len served in the US Navy during WW II. On March 15, 1941, he married Marge Vanderwerf, who preceded him in death on May 23, 2014. They resided in Grand Rapids until moving to Coopersville in 1948, when they opened the dream of their lives----Kastelin Bakery on Main St. Lenéaas idea of combining the bakery with a coffee bar was a huge success in Coopersville. Many will remember the honor system of paying for their coffee and donuts at the Koffee Kup. Len & Marge together made the wedding cakes for their four children and each married grandchild. After selling the bakery in 1979, Len became the baking instructor at the Ottawa County Careerline Tech. Len served his Lord faithfully, being active at Coopersville Reformed Church, Church of the Savior (Coopersville), Church of the Living Christ (Fremont), and most recently, Family of God Community Church (Newaygo). Family and friends fondly remember the fun times at their cottage on Nichols Lake and later at Pickeral Lake, where they owned Kastle Inn Resort. Retirement years were spent at Bayshore Windmill Gardens (Bradenton, Florida) where they danced many a night away! Wherever mom and dad were--the family followed! Len & Marge together consumed countless cups of coffee enjoyed with a donut. He leaves behind four children: Marilyn and Gary Barrett (Newaygo), Judy and Tom Ruster (Hartland), Barb and Rick Boss (Newaygo), Jim and Deb Kastelin (Ludington), 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Kathleen Miedema (Jenison), and a brother-in-law, Gerald (Ruth) VanderWerf (Lansing). Len is preceded in death by their son, Lawrence James Kastelin (April 1955). To remember and celebrate Lenéaas life, the visitation will be Monday, October 13, 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Family of God Community Church, 90 Quarterline Rd., Newaygo, MI. A memorial service will be on Tuesday, October 14th, at 2:00 pm at the church. Burial in Fairplains Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MI. Memorial contributions may be given to Family of God Community Church.
