John Harry Flikkema

October 3, 1952 — September 22, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of John Harry Flikkema, who died Monday September 22, 2025 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease in Grand Rapids, MI. He was to turn 73 on October 3rd.

John worked alongside his father painting and hanging wallpaper in Grand Rapids for many years. He also taught himself hydroponic gardening, purchasing 2 large greenhouses in Belgrade, MT. Later, he and wife Julie owned a gift and postal shop in St. Petersburg, FL. John was an entrepreneur and lifelong learner.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julie Flikkema, his children Melissa Nestle and Sarah (Francisco Rumaldo), and his grandchildren, Alex (Leticia Nestle), Zach Nestle, Madison Nestle and Savida Flikkema, great grandchildren Matteo and Ellena Nestle and his dogs Gabrielle and Jaxson. His siblings, Jantina (David Perry) of Coronado, CA, Mark of Grand Rapids, and Alice Gutierrez of Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Koert and Itje Flikkema, his brother Maynard (Janice Hoit) and son Matthew.

John’s happiest moments were spent outdoors, especially paddling his kayak in the river or riding his Harley Davidson. John and Julie lived on the Muskegon River before retiring in 2020 to Salt Springs, FL where they enjoyed the Ocala National Forest and discovered a wonderful community. He passed on to his children a deep love for nature and respect for the wildlife around them, along with the values of hard work and integrity. Music was always part of his life, with classic rock and blues filling the background of countless family memories. Side by side with his wife, his partner in all things, he poured his heart into fixing up their homes. Together, they built not just places, but a lifetime of adventures and love that carried them across the country.

There will be no service held, John will be cremated and placed with his son Matthew, may they rest in eternal peace. Condolences for the family may be left on John’s guestbook at www.throopfh.com.
