Frederick Schwallier

March 31, 1923 — May 15, 2018

Frederick William Schwallier, age 95, of Marne, passed away at his home Tuesday, May 15, 2018.  He was born at home March 31, 1923 to the late Henry and Viola (Kremer) Schwallier of Coopersville. Fred loved baseball and was a pitcher in his earlier years in the Marne Baseball League and the Coopersville American Baseball League. He was a life-long and active member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Marne where he served on several committees including the Finance Committee for the Family Center Building Fund, the Finance Committee for the new church construction and permitting with the Federal Highway Department for drain easements on church property. Fred attended Michigan Agricultural College. He is a lifelong Coopersville area fruit grower who along with his brothers Leonard, George and father Henry owned Coopersville Refrigerated Cold Storage. He was also a partner with his brother George in Ottawa Orchards in Coopersville and the owner of Kent Ottawa Storage in Sparta. Over his life-time Fred was active with many organizations, he served as Treasurer for the Diamond School District, President and Vice –President and Board Member of the Ottawa County Road Commission on which he served for 18 years. He was on the Ottawa County Sanitation and Appeals Board, Board member of the Coopersville Co-op serving terms as Secretary and Treasurer,  member of the Coopersville School Board of Education,  Michigan State Horticultural Society, Kenowa Pomesters Life Time Member and Member of the Peach Ridge Growers Association.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his three brothers Leonard, Robert and George Schwallier and sister Georgianna Thome. Fred is survived by his wife of 70 years Donna (Moote) Schwallier; his nine children who he was proud of, Carol Ferris, David (Janet) Schwallier, Philip (Judy) Schwallier, Mark (Kay) Schwallier, Joan (William) Dean, Brian (Lori) Schwallier, Janet (Kerry) Cross, Joseph (Theresa) Schwallier and Lisa (Timothy) Rosel; He was the proud grandfather of 24 grandchildren and a great grandfather to 24 great grandchildren. Fred is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Marilyn Schwallier, Delores Aseltyne, Virginia (Joseph) Lemay and Jean (Steve) Lizak; brothers-in-law, Ralph Moote and Richard (Mary) Moote; many nieces and nephews.  In keeping with his wish cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Marne with Fr. Ayub Nasar Clebrant. Interment will take place in St Mary’s Cemetery, Marne. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday May 22, 2018 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Marne.
