Charles Daniel (Dan) Boom ran unhindered into the arms of Jesus and his beloved wife JoAnn on September 22, 2024. Dan was born on July 12, 1938 to John P. and Thelma Boom in his home in Wyoming, Michigan and attended Wyoming Park High School. His life changed forever when he met JoAnn Vonk in sophomore English. He stole her pencils and her heart, and they would spend the next 69 years together. They were married in Virginia not long after they graduated from high school and Dan joined the U.S. Army. They lived in Virginia, then in Ft. Campbell, KY where he served in the 101st Airborne Division. After his honorable discharge, they moved back home to Michigan and bought Dan’s grandparents’ summer home in Coopersville. It was in that home that they built a lifetime of memories and love.
Dan was a wonderful provider for his family, working first as a roofer and then as owner and president of J&L Roofing Company, which was started by his dad and uncle. He ran the business alongside his brother John E. Boom. He retired from J&L after 40 years and the brothers passed the business on to their sons Bob and John R. Boom. He instilled his core values of hard work and strong will to his children and grandchildren.
Dan was known for his amazing generosity, which he bestowed on family, friends, and strangers alike. He would have given anyone the shirt off his back if he thought it was needed. He donated to many organizations financially, but more with his time and talent. He was a roofer by trade but knew how to do and fix everything and he did. In his retirement, he took up the art of woodworking and created fine pieces of furniture for family members, church auctions, and anyone who asked. He traveled often to Guatemala where he built homes and schools and to Kentucky where he repaired homes through Grace Covenant Ministries. He volunteered his time many places throughout the years alongside JoAnn. They traveled with good friends and did mission trips in Oklahoma, Alaska, and Michigan.
Through Dan’s quest of helping anyone and everyone in need at his incredibly fast “Boom Speed,” he had a few mishaps along the way. He fell off a roof in Kentucky and broke his leg. He had a terrible accident with a tractor in 2010 which left the soft tissue of his legs completely shredded. The doctors said he would not walk again, but God and Dan had other ideas. Not only did Dan walk again, but he served the Lord, his family and friends for another 14 years.
We are sure that Dan was so excited to see his beautiful wife JoAnn (Vonk) Boom when he got to Heaven. His daughter-in-law Louise Boom, and son-in-law Michael Telder were also there to welcome him. Dan is survived by his children, Bob Boom, Maryjo Telder, and Dori and Matt Keller. His grandchildren - Tom and Mandy Boom, Jodi and Larry Smith, Brian and Brittany Boom, Madison and Connor von der Hoff, Lily, Evan, Adalynn, and Peterson Keller - were his joy. He taught them many lessons, laughed with them a lot, and was willing to do anything for them. He is also survived by seven great grandchildren - Arden, Kamaria, Zeke, Judah, Brinley, Braxton and Callahan. His brother, business partner, and friend, John E. (Pat) Boom will miss Dan and their Tuesday morning breakfast dates at Russ’. His brother-in-law, Lloyd (Mary) Vonk, and sister Joan Faught will also be missing Dan. He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Thelma Boom, his sister Patsy Stratton, his parents-in-law Herman and Virginia Vonk, and his brother-in-law Wayne Vonk.
We will give thanks for Dan’s life and grieve together at a visitation on Thursday, September 26, 4-7 p.m. at Throop Funeral Home, Coopersville and a memorial service on Friday, September 27, 10 a.m. at Coopersville Reformed Church with Rev. John Hines officiating. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Internment, for immediate family only, will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Coopersville Reformed Church All In Building Campaign, 423 W. Randall St., Coopersville, MI 49404 or online at www.coopersvillereformed.com.
