Ann Marie (Fuller) VanderSchuur, known to everyone simply as Ann, passed away on May 27, 2026, in Michigan, leaving behind a life that was as warm, steady, and generous as the smile she so often shared. Born on July 14, 1934, in Grand Rapids, she spent her 91 years building a family, a home, and a reputation for kindness that could not be faked, even on a bad day. She was loving, friendly, and gentle, which is a remarkable combination for someone who also had the quiet superpower of making everyone feel like they mattered the moment she entered the room.
Family was at the center of Ann’s life, and she loved hers with a full heart. She is survived by her children, Jim (Lydia) VanderSchuur, Dan (Kathy) VanderSchuur, Beth VanderSchuur, Sharon Verburg, and Mike (Alexandra) VanderSchuur. She also leaves behind a large and cherished family of grandchildren, Jamie (Ben) Hoffman, Scot (Heather) VanderSchuur, Vicki (Nick) Ward, Jesse (Kena) Townsend, Leanna (Chris) Abel, Jennifer VanderSchuur and Joe Nash, Marie (Brian) Buter, Brandon Jelsma, Brian VanderSchuur, Joshua VanderSchuur, and Christina (Cristina) VanderSchuur, along with 19 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Ann graduated from Creston High School and later from Butterworth School of Nursing, setting the stage for a life of service that suited her well. She worked as an RN at the Veterans Clinic in Grand Rapids, where her compassion and calm presence were gifts to both patients and coworkers. Nursing requires skill, patience, and the ability to keep moving when the day gets long, and Ann handled all of it with grace. She had the kind of steady care that made people feel better before the medicine even had time to work.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert VanderSchuur, whom she loved dearly, as well as by her grandson Alexander Verburg, great-grandson Dylan Hoffman, her parents, Clarence and Martha (Koopman) Fuller, and her siblings James, Clarence Jr., and Jane. While those losses marked deep chapters of sorrow, Ann carried herself with the kind of strength that comes from a life well lived and a love that does not quit.
Ann especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a role she clearly took very seriously and probably never considered retiring from. She loved spending time with family and friends, knitting for those she loved, and traveling with her husband Robert, then with Alexandra and Christina from coast to coast. She also treasured time at the cottage in Rockford, Michigan, on Bostwick Lake, where countless memories were made and where life likely slowed down just enough for good conversation, laughter, and maybe a little extra dessert.
Ann was the kind of person who could brighten a room without trying, comfort a worry without making a fuss, and knit something lovely while still keeping up with the latest family news. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her legacy will live on in every story told, every family gathering shared, and every act of kindness passed forward in her honor.
